The Division provides hospital-based service for examination of placentas and products of conception, as well as comprehensive fetal and neonatal postmortem examinations. The Division of Perinatal and Pediatric Pathology performs 6,000-7,000 examinations of placentas and products of conception specimens per year, in addition to 250-300 perinatal postmortem examinations.
It also provides a consultative service for placentas and postmortem examinations for hospitals in Southeastern Massachusetts and Eastern Connecticut.
The Division is an integral part of the multidisciplinary perinatology team at Women & Infants’ Hospital and the Fetal Treatment Program (a joint venture of Women & Infants’ Hospital and Lifespan - Hasbro Children’s/Rhode Island Hospital and New England Medical Center in Boston).
